YouthPride Volunteer Celebrates 10 Years of Service!
It was 10 years ago this month that Sir Jesse of Decatur got involved at YouthPride. He brought some youth to YouthPride, and YP events; and eventually started helping Tana Hall with teen forum. SJ quickly realized that there was a need for a forum for gender variant and trans youth at YouthPride. This need was not met until two youth, Dante and Clover, stepped forward and co-founded our current TransandFriends forum. Since 2003 he is a Monday evening staple at YouthPride ensuring that TransandFriends meets each week. Paul Rogers, Director of Volunteer Services said, “Sir Jesse is such an important and vital part of YouthPride. I couldn't imagine this place without him.”
Q. What is your favorite memory out of 10 years at YouthPride?
I don't really have one single favorite memory- there have been ups and downs; perhaps, gaining life-long friendships and chosen family are the best parts.
Q. Would you do another 10
For sure! I'm here as long as there's a YP, and I am of Decatur, I will be here.
Q. What are your hopes for all youth?
That they are loved and respected genderlessly- whatever their expression.
Q. Why is YouthPride important to you?
YouthPride is important to me because I have a calling to serve youth, particularly those who are marginalized or queerly situated. Basically, I have committed my life to serving at risk youth- both as a public school teacher, a YouthPride volunteer, and an aspiring youth ally. YouthPride is one of the few places that provides a venue for young people to explore their identities and orientations, without threat of dominant heteronormative outcomes.
Q. Why have you volunteered at YouthPride so long?
I believe in YouthPride's mission- to empower youth and young adults to be resilient in this transient world; a world that is a bit more hazardous for queer and questioning folks.
Q. What is one thing you would tell everyone about YouthPride?
If you have a queerly situated youth in your life, bring them to YouthPride- at least once; every interaction at YP is a potent and important one.
Q. What do you like most about volunteering at YouthPride?
I enjoy meeting new people and discussing gender issues in a feminist framework; questioning notions of masculine and feminine- and that they need not be gendered. I like that the youth quickly find out that their names/pronouns and other expressions of themselves will be honored, even celebrated.
The happiest times I've had at YouthPride have been around energetic events- such as pride- when everyone is pitching in to make big things happen! Of course, starting TransandFriends with Dante and Clover is probably the highlight. There have been gut wrenching sad times as well- some of the youth I have known have passed away prematurely. I have learned to value every moment with the youth; I try to let them know that the world needs them- and that I appreciate and learn from them.
