The David Bohnett CyberCenter at YouthPride
In 1998, the David Bohnett Foundation provided the funding for the first CyberCenter at the Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Center. Since its inception, 36 other David Bohnett CyberCenters (DBCC) have opened across the United States, including one in Atlanta at the YouthPride Center.
YouthPride was awarded a $29,000 grant in September, 2005 to establish the CyberCenter and three months later the YouthPride CyberCenter opened its doors to metro Atlanta's GLBTQ youth, ages 13 to 24 years old.
The YouthPride CyberCenter is comprised of eight individual computer stations, all equipped with state-of-the-art IBM computers and flat-screen monitors. All computers are linked to a high-quality IBM printer. The grant also enabled YouthPride to purchase new desks for each workstation, along with “executive-style” chairs. The CyberCenter also has wireless access for laptop usage.
Members can use the computers, free of charge, to create resumes, work on school projects, seek employment, submit college applications online, search the internet, access health information, or simply chat with their school buddies online.
The staff is in the process of implementing computer training classes for members and plans to start offering free classes in the Fall.
YouthPride is very grateful to the David Bohnett Foundation for its generous support to help enhance the lives of metro Atlanta’s GLBTQ youth. We thank the Foundation for their support and their vision to "improve society through social activism."
